3M Hosts Inspiring Event for Students in Partnership with Brunel University
Nov 4, 2025

In a remarkable initiative to inspire the next generation of STEM graduates, 3M recently welcomed around 70 students to its Bracknell site in collaboration with Brunel University, one of the UK’s foremost technical universities.

The day marked the second of two 'Inspire' events, the first having taken place at Brunel University in June, aimed specifically at a broad range of students, many of who are underrepresented in some way, often missing out on enrichment programmes that build self-worth and confidence.

Brunel University invited schools from its local communities in and around West London, aiming to inspire students aged 13 to 16 towards STEM-related design careers. The event was created to equip these young minds with the tools and confidence to persevere, even when faced with challenges.

During their visit, students explored various career pathways and engaged in hands-on activities. They also interacted with 3M employees, who shared their own career journeys including how their choices led them to their current roles. This interaction provided students with valuable insights into the diverse opportunities within STEM design fields.

Ben Watson, 3M Director, R&D Corporate Research Laboratories, and a visiting professor at Brunel’s Design School, played a pivotal role in organising the event. He is deeply committed to supporting students who face significant challenges due to a lack of support and opportunities, compared to other peer groups.

Ben believes that learning differently in partnership with industry can play a vital role, introducing students to the world of work in engaging and innovative ways. “By exposing these students to real-world STEM careers, we aim to ignite passion and confidence that will carry into their futures,” he says. “It's about showing them that their potential is limitless, regardless of their current academic standing. It also underscores our commitment as a company, to nurturing young talent and creating a future where all students have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their academic achievements.”

The success of both Inspire events was made possible by the dedicated team from Brunel University, who worked alongside 3M’s UK STEM ambassadors.

3M sees partnerships with universities as an effective way to position the company as a key advocate for young people in the community. By removing barriers to education and promoting STEM pathways, 3M continues to be a vocal supporter of community outreach and educational programmes.
