3M recently partnered with Greenlight for Girls to host an inspiring STEM event at its Bracknell HQ, welcoming 120 girls aged 11-15 from local schools and home-schooled groups. The day was packed with hands-on activities, mentorship and insights into the exciting possibilities of STEM careers.
The event aimed to challenge stereotypes and showcase the diverse opportunities available in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). With studies showing a confidence drop in this age group, the focus was on encouragement, exploration and connection with role models to inspire future innovators.
Highlights of the day include:
- Hands-On STEM workshops: From cracking codes and exploring driverless cars to DNA experiments and building communities out of pasta, interactive sessions sparked curiosity and creativity.
- A look inside 3M innovation: A behind-the-scenes tour of the Customer Innovation Centre revealed how 3M solves real-world challenges.
- Inspiring role models: Melissa Rancourt, Founder of Greenlight for Girls and 3M’s Sarah Chapman, Women in STEM Ambassador, shared motivational stories, joined virtually by Jayshree Seth, 3M’s Chief Science Advocate.
- Guest appearance: Local MP Joshua Reynolds joined the girls for leadership and problem-solving activities.
Rachel Owen, Head of Brand and Corporate Communications at 3M, commented: “Judging by the noise levels, all the girls had a brilliant day with us here in Bracknell. We are proud to partner with Greenlight for Girls, as 3M has a rich tradition of inspiring students through STEM activities. This event is more than just an investment in STEM; it's an investment in the future of innovation and a diverse future workforce.”
Melissa Rancourt, founder of Greenlight for Girls, shared her vision for the collaboration: “Together with 3M, we aim to light a path for girls in the UK and Ireland to discover the endless possibilities within STEM fields. Our message is clear: every girl has the potential to achieve greatness in science and technology, and we're here to support that journey every step of the way.”
This event marks another step in 3M’s commitment to advancing STEM education and empowering young women across the UK and Ireland.
